Day 44: Cape Town
We woke up this morning and the power wasn't on so we instantly got up and started walking to the bus station to get on the site seeing bus. We didn't look at the time table on the brochure we had back at the hotel so we got there around an hour before the first bus was going to come. So instead we walked to the waterfront which was pretty nice but it was pretty cold.
We booked robin island for today at 11 so we had to be there at 10:30 to get on the ferry. We went to have breakfast at a cafe before we got into the ferry and we bumped into evaan and Brian from our tour. It was nice to see them before they flew out back to their home. Our breakfast was really late and we almost walked off without eating it because it was just about to turn 10:30. By the time we finished eating and we ran to the clock tower to get on the ferry. Then the gates shut after we got on which was very lucky. The ferry was meant to leave 10 minutes before the boarding time but it left earlier for some reason. On well we made it on.
Robin island was the prison of Nelson Mandela for 18 years of his sentence. We got to see into different sections of the prison. We learnt about the different groups such as group A, B and C being single sells. And D E F being group sells which they had to squeeze around 30 people in the same room. They would only have a few beds then the rest would sleep on the floor on a Matrices. Our tour guide was actually a prisoner there for 5 years so his intel on the prison was amazing. It was awesome to hear about it from someone who had experienced what the prison was actually like.
We got to see Nelson Mandela's prison cell. I actually didn't know what to expect when I saw his cell room. I was expecting it to be a little bigger than what it was. All the cells just had a matrice, table and a bowl. Also the single cells didn't have a toilet they were only allowed to go to the toilet in their free time but if they needed to go they had a bucket to use. Unlike the group cells they had a bathroom attached to the room so they could shower and go to toilet what they wanted.
After we saw the prison we had to get back on the ferry to head back to the water front. On the way back the waves were so big and the boat was actually swaying. People who were standing out the front were getting drenched and they had to hold on tight or they would fall over. When we got back to the waterfront there was an amazing view of the waterfront and table mountain. The weather was incredible sunny and a little clouds in the sky other than the day before.
After Robbin island we caught the city site seeing bus again just to go around the area so I could take some photographs before we left Cape Town. The weather was beautiful sunny but it was still pretty cold up the top of the bus. We went from waterfront to table mountain area then around camps bay, sea point and we got to see the 12 apposels.
We didn't realise that by the time we got around back to the waterfront that it was sunset time so everyone was pretty much killing each other for a roof top seat.
When we got back to the waterfront it was 6:30 we headed straight to the Greek restaurant we've eaten at before. We ordered straight away because we got the food we ordered the other day I had steak with mash and these prawns with feta it was amazing once again!!!! The food came out within 20 minutes so we were done by around 7:15 so we had time to get the movies for 7:30.
We went to see the minion movie at 7:30. I have been dying to see it since it came out. we just missed the realise dates in Australia. The movie finished at 9:30 well after the shops were shut! Then we got a taxi back to the hotel.
