Day 28: Malawi Kande island
Today most of us woke up with a shocking hang over. I was alright though just had a little head ache. I woke up at 6:30 and I couldn't get back to sleep because today was like our sleep in day but no I'm soo used to waking up early I can't sleep in :(
We had breakfast and then headed off on a village walk with two local guys called Kevin and Rodger. All the locals are such beautiful people. We walked around the homes, gardens and fields of local Plants. They told us about their traditional foods. Surprisingly most the percentage of the locals are Christians and only around 3% Muslims.
Once we walked out the gates of the camp site so many locals were ready to pounce on us to try to get to know us so we go to their store and feel pressured to buy something. I had a few guys come up to me asking about my family and my life but I kept asking them about theirs and I think they didn't really expect that. The only guy I really clicked with was called "jack sparrow". He was telling me how he wants to go to collage and become a teacher which I though was so nice.
We then walked to the local school which the children can freely go to they only have to buy the uniform to go to school. The primary school goes from year 1 to 8 almost like an Australian school. There were heaps of children outside without uniform. The only day the children that don't have uniform can learn is on a Wednesday. The principle told us that there are 10 teachers and 150 children per class. That's crazy!!! We went to one of the classes and as soon as we walked in the children started singing and dancing it was incredible. We got to sit down with the children on their tables and got to know the kids a little bit. The children were so cheeky some of them even asked for money. Which I did feel bad for them but I gave a donation to the school instead.
After the school we went to the local hospital and there were tones of people waiting to be examined. This hospital you can get free contraception and the whole clinic is free and depends on visitors donations. There were three newborn babies that we could look at. The babies were literally just born yesterday so I'm so glad we got to see them.
Once we finished at the hospital all of these little children grabbed our hands and walked us to the local markets. This little girl called Lucy would not let go of Andrews hand it was so cute! While I got the children that just demanded money. I think everyone else had cute kids and they obviously thought I would be an easy target :P
Once we finished at the markets we walked back towards the camp site. Jack sparrow found me again and we talked until we reached the gate then he showed me his paintings and there was one I loved it had four elephants with a sunset only thing I didn't like was that it was in black and white. I told him I would buy it if he did it in colour and he was like yes he will make me one specially. He also told me he would give me a present when He comes back with the painting at 5.
After when we got to the camp site Andrew and i decided we did really want to go snorkelling in lake Malawi. It was 15 us each and we had to pay with pay pal because after buying our paintings and other things we didn't have enough local currency. Luckily the guy was so understanding and he sat down with us and helped us use pay pal on his laptop. We met the guy for snorkelling at 2 and had my go pro ready to go but it wouldn't bloody turn on again so I couldn't take any photographs. The fish were incredibly there were these black and blue striped ones which were my favourite. They were called zebra fish. We saw cat fish and hundreds of other breeds. The guy told us that some of the fish only live near Kande island. We snorkelled around the entire island and then we got to climb on the island. The island was literally just rocks piled on one another. When you were snorkelling you could even come right up the sides of the island you just had to be careful because waves would push you towards the rocks.
After snorkelling we had showers and relaxed by the bar. Andrew and Elton played on the pool table. While I went around and photographed the camp site one last time.
We then had a local dinner at Rodger one of the tour guides home. This was rice, beef, beans and spinach and a sweet potato soup. It was all so delicious and it was incredible to be able to be so looked after they even made the dish have no flour just for me. After dinner the family sang and danced for us. These little children were soo amazing. At the beginning there were 5 people singing then as the songs came on and on it became just a bigger crowd soon there were at least 20 people just singing and dancing. One by one they grabbed one of us to dance with it was hilarious. This is definitely one of the biggest highlights of the trip so far!!!!
Tomorrow we are waking up early and spending the whole day on the truck heading to Zambia. It is definitely going to be hard to say goodbye to Malawi and this beautiful camp site!!
