Day 19: Zanzibar
Today we had to pack up all our belongings to check out of the Zenji hotel. We left our bags at the hotel and went for a walk around Stone-town.
We visited the house of wonders. This was a very educational place were we got to learn all about the Swahili people. We learnt all about their way of life e.g what they eat, what they wear, their religion and their traditions on life.


This was very interesting. We learnt how they make the different Dhow boats. There were a few hand made examples of what they looked like. These are boats made out of nothing but wood. We went on one of these boats when we headed to prison island.
We read about what they wear, the population is 98% Muslim in Zanzibar so majority of the people are cover head to toe in cloth. The women wear a veil, a cloth called Khanga which measures 1.75 by 1.25 meters. they love to dress in lots of colours and patterns. Men wear robe, cap and leather sandals. We also read about what jewellery they wear, beads, wood, metal Ect.
We learnt About their different ceremonies to do with the three stages of life. These three stages are birth, marriage and death. A few of these ceremonies are:

Birth:
Herizi charms to protect baby from the evil eye.
Aqiqa: which is sacrificing goats. If its a boy need two goats if a girl only one.
Naming: memory of an ancestor, or important religious figures.
Marriage:
Betrothal: normally parents arrange marriage.
Honeymoon lasts a week
Divorce (Talaka) is a legal act. It is up to the man to decide on the divorce.
Death:
Condolences (Matanga) the period of mourning is restricted to three days.
Grief: the widow must stay away from men for four months and 10 days after husbands death.




After the house of wonders we walked around the foreshore of the bay. We saw so many bower boats all anchored at the bay. We then walked back to the hotel were all our belongings were to check into another hotel were we are meeting our group called the safari lodge hotel.





After we checked out of Zenji we walked 10 minutes with our luggage to the new hotel. We checked into another hotel were we are meeting our group called the safari lodge hotel. This hotel was a little bigger than Zenji it had an awesome bathroom and the shower had the best water pressure thank god!!




After the house of wonders we walked around the foreshore of the bay. We saw so many bower boats all anchored at the bay. We then walked back to the hotel were all our belongings were to check into another hotel were we are meeting our group called the safari lodge hotel.





After we checked out of Zenji we walked 10 minutes with our luggage to the new hotel. We checked into another hotel were we are meeting our group called the safari lodge hotel. This hotel was a little bigger than Zenji it had an awesome bathroom and the shower had the best water pressure thank god!!
We just stayed in the hotel room chilling with the wifi.
Tomorrow we are meeting up with the rest of the group and our tour guide Elton.
